My favorite pictures usually appear under some specific circumstances:

  1. I’m in an unfamiliar area.
  2. It’s early or late or some situation has arisen where I’m able to venture out into an unfamiliar area alone.
  3. My wanderlust draws me to an area I did not expect to be in.

What is frustrating to me is that these three circumstances are very difficult to meet in every-day life, so my every-day pictures tend to be unsatisfying.  Furthermore, I tend to take my best pictures at some distance between me and the subject, as noted by the increased focal lengths in my favorite pictures.

All this adds up to a situation where I realize that I’m uncomfortable taking pictures up close, and I also fail to find inspiration in scenery that I’ve encountered before.

What’s a boy to do? I guess I should start getting all up in people’s faces.
